The CCC Team

These are the three big players in Colorful Colorado Creations at this time. We hope to add team members along the way.

Derek Nykamp

Owner and creator

Derek loves to create new sauces. The hotter the better. Although he makes most of his sauces according to his taste, he does leave a few on the milder side.

Alexa Fredrickson

Taste tester extraordinaire!

Alexa not only put up with all the noises and smells associated with the early days of hot sauce making in our home kitchen, but she also taste tests it. She is Derek’s gorgeous wife and he couldn’t do it without her support.

Wilson

Official heat meter

Although Wilson never actually tries the sauce, he’s in charge of deciding how hot each sauce should be labeled because he’s the boss.

All Things Wilson!

Wilson's Story

As told by Derek’s wife, Alexa

It was an early morning in May, 2011 in Lafayette, CO. I was pulling into the coffee shop parking lot where I worked to open the store for the day. As I walked up to the door, I noticed there was a box sitting in front of the door. This wasn’t unusual because we often got deliveries and that’s what I thought it was. As I got closer, I saw someone had written on top of the box, “Six weeks old. Have no money to take to shelter.” I looked inside and there were all of these eyes peering up at me. It was a litter of kittens. My heart just about melted at that point.

Throughout the day, kittens were adopted out of that coffee shop. My plan was to take any that didn’t get adopted to the shelter after work. There were two kittens left that day: Wilson and his brother. I brought them home and I decided to bring them to my parents because they said they were interested in adopting one of them. The morning that I left to drive to Canon City, I put Wilson and his brother into a box to transport them. As I was walking out the door, his brother nearly escaped into the early morning darkness. He was a wild little thing. My parents ended up adopting him and naming him Broder because this word means “brother” and he and Wilson were brothers.

This is how Wilson and I ended up together. Wilson finally had a home, too. He has his very own personality. He loves to cuddle (when he’s in the mood); he loves to take naps and explore; but, above all, he LOVES to eat. He eats nearly everything! He’s a wonderful taste tester in the kitchen. Wilson teaches me a lot about how to live in the moment and how to love unconditionally.

NOT Getting Sauced

Supporting a Good Cause

Make a Donation

Colorful Colorado Creations proudly allocates half of all proceeds from Junkie’s Revenge to establish a dedicated fund aimed at assisting participants in the Weld County ATC program with the myriad challenges they face during early recovery. Whether it’s providing funds for a meal or assisting with a deposit for a sober living arrangement, the fund is designed to offer support for essential life needs that often arise in the initial stages of the ATC program, aiding participants in their journey toward recovery.

While half of all proceeds from Junkie’s Revenge purchases automatically contribute to the fund, your additional contribution ensures that 100% goes directly towards aiding early recovering addicts. Colorful Colorado Creations does not deduct any administration fees or retain a single penny from your donation. Every cent you donate goes directly to the fund.

As the program expands and contributions are distributed, we will provide updates on our social media platforms and eventually on our website to demonstrate how your generosity is positively impacting lives and celebrating the journey of recovery.

On every label of our sauce, you will find the line saying,

“Making sauce, not getting sauced since 4-19-20.”

This is the day Derek took his last hit. Although he had given up other substances years before this, this is the date he took his last mind or mood altering substance. The decision to give up ALL drugs and alcohol was what made the creation of these tasty sauces possible.

Derek is a recovering addict who loves to share his experience, strength, and hope with others. He wants all addicts and those who are left in the wake of the destructive force that is addiction to know that there is a way out and always hope.

Never give up, because life on the other side is beyond rewarding.

An Attitude of Gratitude

Thank you all for the help!

I want to recognize all the people who helped me along the way. From the pool players at OutRiders Bar and Grill and Wyler’s Pub who were my taste testers and first customers, to the amazing people who helped me with my label design and editing.

Jill F. has been a wonderful source of encouragement and support from the beginning. Jill helped me tremendously on editing my labels, and website.

Jon at Bear River Bottling was not only a friend and taste tester, but also a great consultant and sounding board when I was facing the many hurdles to get to this point. Jon was also the first inspiration to make sauce many years ago when he started his amazing journey to sauce stardom. Find his sauce on the “Our Saucy Friends” page.

Matthew at Moon Labeling helped me get my final artwork figured out, and he is the producer of my labels. If you need any help with printing, reach out to Matthew on “Our Saucy Friends” page.

Asa was a fishing buddy and a light-hearted fun artist. Asa helped with the early art work. With a very sad heart, it pains me to say that Asa passed away in 2022, but his impact will last forever.

Most of all, I would like to thank my amazing and beautiful wife Alexa who put up with the noise, smells, and pure craziness that is not only sauce making, but is me. Oh yeah! Thank you Wilson for being my mascot.
